For most buyers in Madinah, one question comes first: how close is it to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi? The answer is more nuanced than a number on a map, because access, walking routes and the character of each district matter as much as the distance itself.
What “near the Haram” means in practice
The area immediately around the Prophet’s Mosque — within a few hundred metres — is almost entirely hotels and pilgrim accommodation, with very little private residential property. The first ring of genuinely residential neighbourhoods begins around one to two kilometres out, where families live year-round and where apartment buildings for private ownership are developed. An apartment 1–2 km from the Haram is, for a resident, a “near the Haram” home: a walk of roughly fifteen to twenty-five minutes, or a few minutes by car.
The Darb Al-Sunnah corridor
Among the approaches to the mosque, the route south along Quba Road towards Masjid Quba has particular significance: it follows the path the Prophet ﷺ walked between Quba and his mosque, and it is being redeveloped as the Darb Al-Sunnah — a landscaped pedestrian corridor linking the two mosques. Homes on this corridor combine walking access to the Haram with the calmer surroundings of an established residential district and the shops, cafés and food street along Quba Road.
Daily life and prayer
Residents living within this radius routinely attend prayers at the Haram, particularly Fajr and Isha, and walk or take a short taxi during Ramadan and the Hajj season when the roads closest to the mosque are pedestrianised. For families, the balance of a quiet street to live on with the Haram within easy reach is exactly what these corridor neighbourhoods offer.
